Australia needs federal protection for babies born alive after an abortion

In my interview with James Macpherson on Sky News, I shared some deeply concerning and often overlooked issues regarding babies born alive after abortions in Australia.

I discussed the tragic story of Jessica Jane, a baby who was born alive after an induced abortion and was left to die without any comfort or care. This incident was not isolated, and I expressed my frustration with the lack of legal protection for these innocent lives. I also highlighted a study that showed babies could survive for an average of 32 minutes after a failed abortion and mentioned a provision in South Australia's law that ensured equal treatment for all babies born alive in such circumstances.

I emphasised the urgent need for awareness and federal protection for these babies. There is a bill before the federal parliament that aimed to prevent such incidents, and I urge everyone to support it. The Senate inquiry is expected to release a report on mandatory reporting of live births following an abortion in West Australia at the end of the month, and I hope that politicians would vote in favour of providing care to these babies.
